Maximizing Your Barbell Sports 1-Day Workshop

Bridging the Clinic and the Weightroom to Take Your Olympic Lifting & Powerlifting to the Next Level

Too often a typical timeline of a lifter is to train until an injury pops up, take time off lifting and get treatment to help resolve the injury, then jump back into training at full speed.

This separation of the platform and treatment table is, in most cases, unnecessary. Managing injuries while adjusting training programs can help keep athletes training and seeing progress while also reducing the impact and even healing or preventing those injuries from becoming a limiting factor to training and performance.

This one-day workshop will go through the following concepts:

  • Tendinopathies, an incredibly common issue, how to treat them effectively with the most updated scientific information available (plus treatment demonstrations from Pivotal Physiotherapy)
  • how to still train during these treatments versus having to take time off
  • Self-assessments to use to determine if you need to adjust your own training, or the training of your athletes
  • exercise adjustments to help continue to train hard and improve your ability to get under the bar more effectively without compensative issues.
  • Programming considerations to get the most from your time on the platform and stay healthy for the long term.

Sam is a Doctor of Physical Therapy Candidate (May 2018) and strength & conditioning coach originally from Edmonton and currently residing in California. He has presented across Canada & the United States for organizations such as the American Physical Therapy Association and Physical Health Education Canada. Having prior experience working with professional hockey & Olympic sport athletes, Sam is well versed with a wide range of athletic development. As a competitive barbell sport athlete, he has specialized in rehabilitation and performance for this population, working with individuals from grass roots to international levels.

Dean is an exercise physiologist and personal trainer in Edmonton, AB. He has been featured in publications such as Men’s Health, Women’s Health, T-Nation and Bodybuilding.com, and has taught workshops across North America and Europe. His clients range from cardiac recovery and joint replacement recipients to Olympic and Paralympic medalists, and everyone in between. He has developed a reputation as a leading authority on hip and shoulder mobility and assessment.

FMT BASIC introduces the evidence based approach to taping for pain, enhancing fluid dynamics, posture, nerve entrapment and scar and redefines our understanding of the effects of elastic therapeutic taping on pain mitigation, circulation and proprioception. FMT Basic lays the groundwork for a practical framework of ‘taping movement, not muscles’ to replace an outdated model focused on directional taping to activate or inhibit muscles.


FMT PERFORMANCE expands on the concepts taught in FMT BASIC (static based) and explores enhancing human movement and performance via functional taping methods (movement based). The anatomy and physiology of myofascial lines are covered. Movement screening is used to determine dysfunction in specific anatomical planes of motion and how to apply tape in a manner that improves movement and function.

Evolve High Performance Hockey Program

Evolve Strength will be implementing Edmonton's highest level hockey training program available for all teams and players in the City of Edmonton and surrounding area. Our goal is to provide a fully monitored, high performance program focusing on sport specific development of speed, strength, agility, and power, while analyzing each athlete’s physical and mental health to ensure the greatest development to prepare them for the season. The program is led by a high caliber team of strength and conditioning coaches and personal trainers specific to hockey. To support the health of our athletes, Evolve has fully incorporated the usage of services from our team of physical therapists, acupuncturists, massage therapists, dietitians, chiropractors, and yoga instructors to first rehabilitate any existing injuries developed in the previous season, and second, to ensure each individual is working at their highest ability during the off season. 

With such a strong and wide array of professionals working together with the players, coaches, and parents, we can deliver the most efficient and effective program in Edmonton to ensure top quality treatment, training, and monitoring of every individual and member of your team.

Off-Season Program Development

Off-season programs are vital to helping athletes achieve success and maximize their growth for the upcoming season. This program is developed to address any existing injuries or inefficiencies present in the previous season, then will shift focus to enhancing the stability and power of our athletes, while developing their speed and agility as it applies to hockey specific movements and drills. The off-season program is committed to educating each player in other key areas such as; injury rehabilitation, nutritional guidance, proper warm-up and cool-down protocols,  and safe and effective Olympic lifting techniques as the basis of all power derived movements in training are developed from this . Physical testing will be offered throughout the program to consistently track the athlete’s progress during this critical point in their hockey development.

A heavy emphasis of the off-season will be put on the athlete’s mobility, speed and power; with the ultimate goal to create a faster and stronger player on the ice. Focusing on core stabilization will play a large role in protecting our athlete’s health and season durability, while ensuring the athlete’s strength is being properly used. Each athlete will develop cardiovascular systems effecting anaerobic and aerobic levels that prepare the body for fitness testing and the rigors of an entire hockey season.

Program focus will always stem back to the individuals on ice performance and ultimately what the player needs to become an overall better athlete. In conjunction with the off-ice program, our trainers will be able to work in close relationship with the on ice staff to ensure our athletes reach full potential.

On Ice Program

Playing a large role in the process of each individual athlete will be the transfer of knowledge and abilities from the off-ice program onto the ice. We strongly encourage our athletes to allow us to be responsible for both on and off-ice programming to ensure the player is properly executing both areas of training. A strong emphasis will be placed on Power Skating and Skill Development sessions with specialized coaches in those precise fields. A direct line of communication between on and off ice trainers will be established to ensure our athletes are correcting areas of weakness and maximizing all areas of their skill set. 

Breakdown of the included on ice program is as follows:

  • 10x sessions with a Power Skating instructor
  • 10x sessions with a Skills Development Coach
  • Additionally a pre training camp conditioning camp will be made available to each athlete at a separate price in the month of August

Misfit Powerlifting Presents Shell Shocked: A Powerlifting meet for mental health

We are very excited to host Shell Shocked: A Powerlifting meet to bring awareness to mental health.

With PTSD awareness on the rise, Misfit Powerlifting in conjunction with the Canadian Powerlifting League has teamed up to host a meet in support for PTSD and traumatic brain injury in service workers, soldiers and veterans.

All proceeds raised from this event will be donated to the department of Canadian Military and Veterans' Clinical Rehabilitation Research at the University of Alberta. 

There will be two platforms running at the same time; a CPL sanctioned platform and an unsanctioned "fun" platform open to anyone from any federation who wants to participate. 

We are also having internationally recognized Powerlifter Brandon Lilly coming to Emcee the event and will be putting on 2 seminars on Sunday November 27th, 2016. The seminar times are:

1. 0800-1400

2. 1500-2100

Powerlifting Technique Workshop

We are very pleased to announce we will be having a full day workshop on the Squat, Deadlift and Bench Press taught by current national bench press record holder in the 120kg class, Avi Silverberg. 

Movement technique is the basis of everything you do in the gym.  Correct technique can take years to learn, and even longer to master.  Through this seminar, an analysis of the squat, bench press, and deadlift, will be achieved. Both classroom and practical portions of the seminar will seek to understand how to: leverage bio-mechanical principles to maximize technique, realize the full potential of the competition movement standards, modify and progress the movements based on need and athlete readiness, ensure the movements are performed safely to prevent injury, and diagnose and correct movement deficiencies. 

Avi's background in powerlifting started as an athlete, rising through the various levels, and ultimately competing at 8 National Championships and 3 World Championships, highlights include: being the 3rd best bench presser in Canadian history, achieving a World bronze bench press medal, and being the current National Bench Press Record holder in the 120k/264lb class (lifting 300k/661lbs).  In conjunction with my athletic career in powerlifting, he have also studied sport science and human movement, graduating from a Master’s of Science degree in Kinesiology in December 2014 with a research focus in coaching elite master athletes in powerlifting.  With this experience, it has led him to start my own coaching business, where he currently coach over 40 National level powerlifters, as well as numerous local and provincial-level powerlifters.  Most recently, Avi have served as the Team Canada Head Coach on numerous World Teams, including the: 2012 IPF World Bench Press Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic; 2013 IPF World Sub-Junior/Junior Championships in Killeen, Texas; 2014 IPF World Classic Championships in Potchefstroom, South Africa; and 2015 IPF World Classic Championships in Salo, Finland.  In addition, he provides coaching education and seminars on a variety of topics, including: powerlifting movement technique, competing for the first-time, and programming for powerlifting.  Further to his coaching background, Avi holds numerous administrative positions within Canada and Alberta, including being a National-level referee, a member of the Student Scholarship Committee, and President of the Alberta Powerlifting Union. 

We are very excited to have such a celebrated and well educated coach present this amazing workshop so expect the spots to fill up very quick.

Who is Edmonton's Sickest Squatter?

This challenge is to answer the ultimate question, who is Edmonton's Sickest Squatter? Will it be Olympic Weightlifters? Powerlifters? Strongmen? Crossfitters? Or Bodybuilders?

Rules: We will use the official competition scale before the challenge, all participants will take their bodyweight on the bar (rounded to the nearest kilo). Five minutes on the clock for as many reps as possible. Must squat below parallel, can do high or low bar. Each participant requires a person to act as a counter, and to make sure proper depth is observed. 

This will be done 100% RAW. No belt, no wraps, no sleeves. Oly shoes are fine.

Buy in: $20 per person

Managing the Off-Season Athlete

This seminar will offer an in-depth discussion of training modalities aimed at improving the performance of athletes during the offseason component of the competition calendar.Comparisons between offseason and inseason training will be drawn from real data taken from Rugby Canada.

Topics will include
• Musculoskeletal assessment and its relation to program design
• Interaction between mobility & stability and how to identify deficits in both
• Suggestions for program design as it relates to weight training, conditioning and addressing movement quality 

Kieryn’s has worked with a variety of athletes through various phases of their training.
Powerlifters, Track Sprinters and Rugby Players are a few of the athletes he’s trained
through off-season and post-rehabilitation phases of the training cycle.

He has spent the last year working with Canada’s National Senior Men’s Rugby 7’s
Squad leading up to and during the 2015-2016 World Rugby HSBC Sevens World Series.

Please be prepared to MOVE. There will be both a classroom and active component.

Powerlifting Program Design Workshop

Looking at developing your programming skills withing Powerlifting? We are having Avi Silverberg host a phenomenal 2 day workshop on the development, analysis and implementation of various periodization models specific to Powerlifting. Here you will learn  programming language, key principles in periodization, planning phases, periodization models, and a brief discussion on how to implement and 'put everything into practice'.  You will also evaluate case studies of programs and design a 'target population' for those programs (i.e. who would those program be optimal for) thereby understand each programs' strengths and limitations and  write a powerlifting program with Avi's support using a certain periodization model.

If you are a Powerlifting coach, trainer, lifter or someone who wants to develop their own program specific to your needs, this 2 day workshop is for you. The education of program design is essential to achieve high levels of success in Powerlifting or any strength based sport. Individuals who attend will develop a strong grasp of periodizaiton fundamentals that can carry over to other aspects of high performance training, not only specific to Powerlifting. 

Avi, who is also doing a Powerlifting technique workshop will be the host of this workshop. His background in powerlifting started as an athlete, rising through the various levels, and ultimately competing at 8 National Championships and 3 World Championships, highlights include: being the 3rd best bench presser in Canadian history, achieving a World bronze bench press medal, and being the current National Bench Press Record holder in the 120k/264lb class (lifting 300k/661lbs).  In conjunction with his athletic career in powerlifting, Avi have also studied sport science and human movement, graduating from a Master’s of Science degree in Kinesiology in December 2014 with a research focus in coaching elite master athletes in powerlifting.  With this experience, it has led him to start my own coaching business, where he currently coach over 40 National level powerlifters, as well as numerous local and provincial-level powerlifters.  

Most recently, Avi have served as the Team Canada Head Coach on numerous World Teams, including the: 2012 IPF World Bench Press Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic; 2013 IPF World Sub-Junior/Junior Championships in Killeen, Texas; 2014 IPF World Classic Championships in Potchefstroom, South Africa; and 2015 IPF World Classic Championships in Salo, Finland.  In addition, he provide coaching education and seminars on a variety of topics, including: powerlifting movement technique, competing for the first-time, and programming for powerlifting.  Further to Avi's coaching background, he hold numerous administrative positions within Canada and Alberta, including being a National-level referee, a member of the Student Scholarship Committee, and President of the Alberta Powerlifting Union.

The 1 Year Anniversary are here!

Come join us to celebrate our 1st birthday! The festivities will be on April 9th from 12-4pm. We will have free BBQ, cake, and an open house during those hours. There will be free admission all day so come for a lift and have a wicked post workout meal filled with burgers, hotdogs, and cake!

We will have many of our professionals setting up tables for you to check out with free massages, prizes, draws, and info packs on what's going onat Evolve.

Firefighter Fitness Test Preparation

Looking to become a Firefighter and want to make sure you're at the top of the list? The Firefighter Physical Fitness Test challenges multiple dimensions of physical performance from aerobic endurance, upper body power, and lower body power to full body endurance and full body strength. 

With such a high number of applicants every year, it is essential to dedicate your training in the right ways to ensure your success. While most facilities aren't equipped to train an applicant for this rigorous test, at Evolve we have the equipment, space, expertise to teach the proper techniques for each test, and the knowledge base to produce and maximize your performance in this program.

We have designed a program focused on education and performance. In the Firefighter Fitness Test Preparation Program, you will receive training in one of the best scientifically based Firefighter-specific programs tailored to excelling at this test. 

We are offering 3 program lengths with varying start times for you to choose which one will prepare you best for your exam. We have 12 week, 8 week and 6 weeks programs:

Nutrition Seminar

We will be having a nutrition seminar hosted by Registered Dietitian Leah Allan. Nutrition is one of the most important aspects of training and also one of the hardest dimensions to control, having Leah touch on the importance of nutrition will give all attendees a stronger base of knowledge to help them in developing the right eating habits for training. 

Optimal nutrition is a critical piece of the sports performance puzzle. In fact, neglecting your diet will impact both training and recovery and ultimately prevent you from performing at your peak! The field of sports nutrition falls victim to myriad myths and misinformation, but this sports nutrition seminar aims to clarify fact vs. fiction by highlighting evidence-based recommendations for exercise preparation, recovery, and performance.

Specific topics include:

- Ideal macronutrient distribution
- Fueling your body before, during, and following exercise
- Nutrient timing
- Starvation mode
- Cutting weight while maintaining strength
